Frequently asked questions

Do I need a bill of sale to sell a car in Idaho?

The seller must create a bill of sale if the title has no 'selling price' field. ITD offers a Bill of Sale form (ITD 3738) listing the vehicle, odometer reading, true selling price, sale date, new lienholder and both parties' details.

What happens to the license plates when I sell my car in Idaho?

ITD says the license plates belong to the seller and do not go with the vehicle, and the seller may move them to another vehicle they own. The release of liability form reminds sellers to remove their plates at sale or transfer.

Do I have to tell the state I sold my car in Idaho?

The seller can file a Notice of Release of Liability (ITD 3858) within five days of delivering the vehicle. The filing may protect the seller from liability for injury, property damage, infractions and towing or storage charges arising after the buyer takes delivery.
