How to Get Paid Safely When You Sell Your Car
Payment is where private car sales go wrong most often. The safest rule is simple: do not hand over the title or keys until the money is truly yours and you have confirmed it with the bank.
Cash
Cash is straightforward for smaller sales. Count it in front of the buyer, and consider meeting at your bank so a teller can check for counterfeit bills and you can deposit it right away. Carrying a large amount of cash is a risk, so for bigger prices, a bank meeting is better than a driveway handoff.
Cashier's check
A cashier's check can be safe, but fake ones are a common scam. Meet the buyer at their bank, watch the check being issued, and then deposit it at your own bank and wait for confirmation that the funds are good. A check that looks real can still be fake, and it can take days for a problem to show up. Do not rely on a bank saying the funds are "available," which is not always the same as being fully verified.
Bank transfers
A wire transfer or an instant bank transfer can be fine once the money has actually arrived in your account. Check your own account, not a screenshot or a confirmation email the buyer sends you. Be cautious with payment apps, since they have limits and different rules for reversing payments, and some are not designed for large transactions.
Red flags
- A buyer who offers more than your asking price and asks you to send back the difference
- A buyer who wants to pay by check before seeing the car
- Pressure to hand over the keys or title before the payment clears
- A third-party "shipping agent" or escrow service you have never heard of
- Payment confirmations that arrive by email or text rather than in your own account
Order of operations
Agree on the price and payment method before the buyer comes over. Receive and verify payment. Then sign the title and bill of sale and hand over the keys. See the paperwork checklist for what to complete at the sale, and our bill of sale guide for what to put in writing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest way to accept payment for a car?
Cash verified at your bank, or a cashier's check issued in front of you at the buyer's bank and confirmed by your own bank, are common safe choices for private sales.
Can I accept a personal check?
It is risky. A personal check can bounce days later, so wait for it to fully clear before handing over the car.
Is it okay to accept payment through an app?
Only if the money has arrived in your account and you understand the app's limits and reversal rules. Many people avoid apps for large amounts.
When should I hand over the keys and title?
Only after payment has been received and verified.
